About

In 1970 the Nederlandse Spoorwegen decided to make a measurable split in the definitions of local trains and intercity trains. For the new local train projects, NS decided that the Mat'64 just wasn't suitable because of the short distances between the stations. The NS decided to start a new project for a train to meet the needs of local service, under the working name "Buurtspoormaterieel". The driving factors for this new train were to be: A comfortable single-step entry point; quick acceleration and braking, suitable for stations as close together as 1.5km with stop times no longer than 20 seconds; a modern, compact front end design; a modern, ergonomic and safe driver's cab that should last at least 25 to 30 years; 20,000km between visits to the workshops; a mass of around 95 tons; enough power to be able to run with an additional middle carriage that was 26.1m long with a weight of around 35 tons. The Sprinters were built by Talbot (now: Bombardier Transportation) in Aken. On March 7th 1975, the prototype 2001 unit was delivered. The production units that were ordered in May 1977 - 60 SGM-1 variants - were delivered from September 28th 1978. The SGM-2 variants were ordered in June and September 1981 - 45 new middle wagons to lengthen existing consists to three wagons, and 15 all-new three-car consists. This brought the total to 60 three-wagon SGM-2 variants that entered service in 1983.
