Verlengd InterRegio Materieel (VIRM) is a doubledecker trein used by the Dutch railways (Nederlandse Spoorwegen - NS). Made up of 178: 98 four-carriage consists (the VIRM-IV, of which 51 are the newest series VIRM-4) and 80 six-carriage consists (VIRM-VI).
The first series (VIRM-1) came about by a life extension program for the older DD-IRM dubbeldeksinterregiomaterieel (double decker inter-region train). When originally delivered, this rolling stock was named the Regiorunner. It was designed for inter-region routes. The first unit (8201) was delivered to the NS in Leidschendam on April 21st 1994 from the Talbot Aken facility.
In 2000 an order was placed for 128 new carriages to lengthen the existing trains. The old three-carriage 8200 series were lengthened by the addition of a power pickup car (ABv6) and became the 9400 series. The old four-carriage 8400 series were lengthened by the addition of both a power pickup car (ABv6) and a motorcoach (mBv7) and became the 8600 series. The most visible difference with the newer trains was the position of the pantographs. They were moved from the driving trailers at the ends of the trainset to the power pickup car (ABv6) in the middle.
In 2007 NS Reizigers ordered another 205 VIRM carriages from Bombardier Transportation, the first of which was delivered on June 27th 2008.
With the extension to the VIRM, the entire train was fitted with a new diagnostic system in the cab to report faults and control train systems. The driver uses the system via an LCD display in the cab to check the train systems before departure, to set things like the destination displays, and to monitor the train systems for faults. Once on the move, the display can also show other information such as speed, air pressures, voltages, power draw, suspension settings etc.
Through a redesigned air suspension system, the passenger comfort in the VIRM is considerably improved over the original models. The air conditioning system is also vastly improved, and the VIRM-IV was the first NS train to get a fully contained vacuum toilet system with a bioreactor.
