Quick Overview

In 1977, units 4001-4007 were built as the prototypes by Talbot in Aken. They were referred to as IC3 and later as ICM-0 to differentiate them as from production units. They first saw service between Eindhoven and Venlo, on a section of track specifically designed for speeds up to 160km/h. Later they went into service between Amsterdam and Nijmegen. From 1983 onwards the followup series 4011-4097 appeared.

About

In 1977, units 4001-4007 were built as the prototypes by Talbot in Aken. They were referred to as IC3 and later as ICM-0 to differentiate them as from production units. They first saw service between Eindhoven and Venlo, on a section of track specifically designed for speeds up to 160km/h. Later they went into service between Amsterdam and Nijmegen. From 1983 onwards the followup series 4011-4097 appeared. There were many changes between these and the prototype versions.
Between 1983 and 1990, Koploper units 4011-4097 were built. These units had two powered bogies under one of the driving trailers. The ICM-2's (4051-4097) used 'choppers' to vary the current to the drive motors, giving the train a unique sound on departure.
Between 1990 and 1994, 50 four-wagon Koplopers were built (4201-4250). These units had an extra powered bogie (under the mB passenger car) and added magnetic trackbrakes.
The Koploper got it's official nickname thanks to the characteristic walk-through driving trailers ('doorlopkop', in Dutch). The literal English translation of Koploper is Frontrunner. These walk-through units meant that travelers, catering crew and conductor could walk from one unit to the next without waiting for a station stop.
The walk-through heads have not been used since October 31st 2005. The initial reason given was that passengers and train crew just didn't use them enough. Also, once the onboard catering service was stopped there was no real need for them any more. Because of the complicated construction, they were prone to damage and malfunctions causing problems and delays when coupling and uncoupling - another reason they went out of service.
The unit modernisation started in November 2006, beginning with the three-wagon versions (series 4011-4097). The first new version was delivered in April 2007 from the NedTrain workshops in Haarlem. To differentiage the newly renovated versions from the old, they were denoted as ICMm. These units have a revised interior with about 13% more seating (but less legroom).
